Industries including health, finance and legal may have additional obligations that align with the Essential Eight.

What are the four ACSC Essential Eight maturity levels?▼

Maturity Level Zero means no controls in place — very high risk. Maturity Level One means basic controls are in place, resistant to opportunistic attacks — the minimum target for all small businesses. Maturity Level Two means a solid posture resistant to targeted adversaries — recommended if you handle customer data or medical records. Maturity Level Three means a robust posture against sophisticated, persistent threats — typically required for government suppliers.

This covers the highest-impact basics — patching applications and operating systems, enabling MFA on all accounts, maintaining daily backups and restricting admin privileges.
