Most Android smartphones and tablets do not need to install an antivirus. However, it is also true that Android viruses exist and antivirus with useful features can provide an extra layer of security.

Before answering your question, you must understand the basic architecture of the Android operating system. Viruses are the consequences of the vulnerability of the system to protect itself from any external programs that work maliciously without the knowledge of the user and/or system.

You will notice that all the programs are installed in the userland area (uppermost layer) below which application framework is there.

Fundamentally all Linux-based distributions are immune to any viruses. Android has no exception. Android is just yet another Linux-based mobile operating system.

So, the answer to your question is NO! Android phones do need not any antivirus. But that doesn’t mean that Android is safe from Malware & Viruses, just the mechanism & propagation (spreading) of the intrusion of the Virus or any Malware is different than that of Windows.

Viruses & Malware come from user-installed programs. They can not spread automatically like Windows Viruses. Here, the end-user is the culprit, who confers user rights to such programs that may infect the userland area of the applications.
