Check the school rule before buying a laptop for 2027
Victorian government primary schools (F–6): from 2027, schools must not invite or allow families to buy or bring their own student digital device for use at school, apart from stated exceptions and transition arrangements. An existing BYO device used before 2027 may continue at the school's discretion until replacement is needed.
Victorian government secondary schools: BYOD can continue. Under the current Department of Education policy, a single common device must cost no more than $980 including GST, or a device list/minimum-spec pathway must include an option that can be met at or below that base-device threshold. The Department reviews the threshold annually. The school's own device list or minimum specifications remain the final requirement.
