Learn how to test NBN speed properly and work out whether the issue is your plan, modem, WiFi or ISP.
A Doreen remote worker was getting 8Mbps on an NBN 50 plan during afternoon video calls. We identified FTTN line attenuation as the limiting factor β and shifted her to a time-of-day work schedule that avoided peak node congestion, improving calls without upgrading the plan.
Understanding the cause helps you make better decisions β and helps us fix it faster.
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) can deliver full plan speeds. FTTN (Fibre to the Node) is limited by your distance from the node β often well below plan speeds.
Evening speeds (7β11pm) are often 30β50% slower than morning speeds on congested RSP networks. Comparing peak vs off-peak reveals RSP quality.
An NBN 250 or 1000 plan needs a router capable of gigabit speeds. Many bundled routers cap at 100Mbps, making faster plans pointless.
Poor quality phone cabling between the NBN box and router can throttle speeds on FTTN and HFC connections. A direct cable always outperforms Wi-Fi for speed tests.
Your result points to either an issue you can address yourself, or one that needs professional attention before it worsens.
You can check yourself: run a speed test via fast.com at different times of day, compare peak vs off-peak speeds, and check whether the result improves when connected via ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi.
You need professional help if: ethernet speeds are below 50% of your plan consistently; your FTTN line shows high attenuation; your router isn't capable of your plan speed; or you need mesh coverage for a large home.

Use a wired connection where possible, test more than once and compare results at different times of day.
Peak-hour congestion, ISP capacity and WiFi load inside the home can all affect evening performance.
Absolutely. Many people think they have an NBN problem when the real issue is router placement, interference or poor WiFi hardware.
