Your IT and Tech Mates Tips: Many open, public Wi-Fi networks aren’t particularly safe to use, since anyone else on the network can see all of the data that’s moving over them. So avoid public Wi-Fi networks as much as you can.

What about my home password-protected WiFi networks? It must be safe, right?

The answer is depends and if someone else has the password for the Wi-Fi network you’re using. They can tap into your home WiFi traffic and silently watch and stole your sensitive information like your online banking username and passwords.

So How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network?

  • WPA2 encryption is the standard for communications on wireless networks between the end point to the router. It is dependent on the length and complexity of your wireless password, so ensure it is as long and as complex (contains letters, numbers, meta characters etc) – as much as you can stomach.
  • I personally think that replacing a home router password every 5–7 days is an overkill. Every few months is probably sufficient.
  • Check regularly which devices you have on your network (you can do so via the router interface). If you don’t recognize something, kick it out.
  • Make sure that all devices on your network are regularly updated to get security patches, anti virus updates etc. Yes, even Macs.
  • Try to limit any exceptions you have on your router/other firewall towards the internet – limit port forwarding, devices that face the internet directly etc. If you know how to, setup a DMZ on your network (some routers do that fairly easily) and place all devices that need direct internet access on it.
  • Most importantly – use common sense, don’t click strange links, don’t go to strange website.
