Identify your iPad model, generation and support status before buying accessories, booking repairs or replacing it.
A Reservoir family brought us an iPad for screen replacement. The back label was worn. Using Settings β About, we confirmed it was an A2270 (iPad 7th gen) not the A2197 the previous shop had assumed β saving them from a mismatched part.
Understanding the cause helps you make better decisions β and helps us fix it faster.
iPad model numbers are printed on the back casing. On older iPads, look near the bottom. On newer iPads with no home button, it's on the side edge.
Settings β General β About shows the model identifier code (e.g. A2316). This is the most reliable identification method when the label is worn.
Screen assemblies, batteries, and charging ports differ between iPad generations. A wrong part order is the most common cause of repair delays.
Unverified parts for the wrong model can fail immediately or damage the logic board. Always confirm the exact model before ordering any component.
Your result points to either an issue you can address yourself, or one that needs professional attention before it worsens.
You can identify your iPad model yourself using Settings β General β About β the model identifier is listed here. Match it against Apple's support page to confirm the exact generation, storage, and connectivity options.
You need professional help if: the iPad won't turn on and you need model identification for insurance or repair purposes; the back label is illegible; or you've purchased a secondhand device and need to verify it matches the description.

The quickest option is Settings > General > About, but you can also use the model number on the back or compare physical features like connector type and home button.
It affects repair pricing, accessory compatibility, resale value and whether Apple still supports the device with updates.
That depends on support status, screen condition, battery health and how you use it. For casual home use, some older iPads are still worth simple repairs.
