My opinion on windows 11
It’s been a few weeks since Microsoft announced Windows 11. A lot of people seem to be excited about it. Based on the information available, I’m not one of those people.
So let me tell you why.
Windows 11 is supposed to be built upon three core pillars:
1) Security
2) Windows Store
3) Continuum
The security pillar is the one we’re all familiar with. It’s been a decade since Windows XP and Vista were released, and during these 10 years, public perception of windows has not improved significantly. To me this initiative is as much about Microsoft wanting to restore windows reputation as it is about windows users wanting additional security. It’s a step in the right direction, but this is an area windows has had since windows 95, so I’m not expecting any revelations here.
The windows store pillar was Microsoft’s response to Apple’s App Store. The problem with this approach is that windows desktop apps are “legacy” apps , and windows-store apps are shiny, new and windows-phone apps.
Microsoft is trying to force windows 10 users into using windows store apps by restricting desktop app usage in windows 10. I’m a windows user since XP, but even I find it annoying that I can’t use windows update without downloading some random “app” (in this case, an windows store app). I’m not saying windows store apps are bad, but windows 10 is pushing them on us by making the desktop experience unbearable.
The third pillar of windows 11 – Continuum – sounds interesting at first glance: windows phone was insanely successful because it allowed users to use exactly the same windows device in a variety of different ways. The windows 11 desktop interface is so different that I don’t see how it can be considered to be the same product with the windows 10 desktop, but windows phone is still a windows phone and there’s not much you can do about it. The only way to make windows mobile devices successful in my opinion was to make them work exactly like windows desktops. This is where windows phone failed.
Microsoft’s goal with windows 10 (and windows 11) was to unify windows platforms into a single one … but this also means that windows desktop is going to be identical to windows tablet and windows phone, which in my opinion is a huge step backwards.
All major windows components are getting deprecated in windows 11 except for windows 10 kernel. windows explorer is gone in windows 11, and all the windows shell functionality is being moved into windows store apps.
