Overheating is one of the most common reasons people call a local tech — and almost nobody knows what’s actually causing it. Five guided questions identify your most likely cause: blocked vents, failed thermal paste, a dying fan or a software issue. Then you get a clear DIY vs book us split so you know exactly what to do next.

Answer based on what your laptop is actually doing — not what it used to do when it was new.
Most overheating laptops fall into one of these four categories. The diagnosis tool above identifies which one is most likely for yours.
The most common cause. Dust builds up on the fan, heatsink and vents over 2–4 years and completely blocks airflow. The CPU can’t cool itself and runs hot constantly.
Thermal paste sits between the CPU and heatsink and transfers heat. After 3–5 years it dries out and cracks. Heat can’t transfer efficiently and the CPU runs 15–30°C hotter than it should.
Fan bearings wear out over time. Signs: grinding or rattling noise, fan that runs very fast then stops suddenly, or a laptop that is completely silent while hot. A failed fan means zero active cooling.
Malware, crypto mining software, Windows Update running in background, or a runaway browser tab can push CPU to 100% constantly. The laptop gets hot even sitting idle with nothing open.
“My laptop was shutting down every 20 minutes from heat. Darren did a full clean and thermal paste replacement — it runs cooler and quieter than it has in years. Worth every dollar.”
“Used the overheating tool on the website which told me I needed a fan replacement. Darren confirmed it on arrival — fixed same afternoon. Fan sounds completely different now, so quiet.”
“4-year-old HP laptop that was throttling so bad it could barely open Chrome. Darren cleaned it out and replaced the thermal paste for $129. It’s like a new laptop.”
