How do I check what devices are connected to my home WiFi? ▼
Log into your router admin panel (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in a browser), enter your admin password, and look for a “Connected Devices” or “DHCP Client List” section. You’ll see a list of device names and MAC addresses. Any device you don’t recognise should be investigated. What’s the difference between a WiFi extender and a mesh system? ▼
A WiFi extender repeats your existing signal — it creates a second network name and often halves the speed. Devices don’t roam seamlessly between them. A mesh system uses multiple access points that all share one network name and intelligently hand off devices as you move around the house. Can my neighbour be using my WiFi without me knowing? ▼
Yes — if your WiFi password is weak or has never been changed from a common pattern, it is possible for neighbours to guess or crack it. Does router firmware affect WiFi security? ▼
Yes — significantly. Router manufacturers release firmware updates to patch security vulnerabilities, many of which can be exploited remotely. A router running firmware from 2021 on a 2026 network has multiple known, unpatched security holes. Enabling auto-update (if your router supports it) or manually checking every 3–6 months is strongly recommended. We check and update firmware as part of every router security setup visit. From $89.
