How can I speed up my Mac?
3 Simple Tips
Do you think Macs are always lightning fast? All Computers, including Macs, slow down over time. Read our guide on how to speed up your Mac with 3 simple tips.
Let’s just skip to the chase — your Mac is most likely slow due to “swapping”, meaning the programs you’re running require more RAM (memory) than is built-in to your machine and it’s writing memory to disk to allow those programs to keep running.
Writing RAM to disk is relatively slow, even with SSDs.
The fix?
Upgrade to 8+ GB RAM if you can. Memory is relatively cheap and easy to install on older models. iFixit.com has good instructions on how to install the memory.
Ensure you have at least 15% of your hard drive free. If you don’t, your Mac will struggle. (If you have 15% of your drive free, then drive space is *not* your problem.) OmniDiskSweeper is my favorite tool for this.
Check “Activity Monitor” (use Spotlight to find it), and look at what’s using the CPU. Sometimes a runaway Safari tab, photo analysis process, or something else will be using a lot of processor time. Google that process name and see what people suggest. Note, these apps install themselves under false pretenses, which make them malware in my book, and you’ll need help to get rid of them: MacKeeper, Optibuy, MegaBackup.
There are other things that can slow down a Mac, including syncing photo databases with iCloud, analyzing faces in your pictures, slow internet, etc., but the above are most common in my experience.
