How to spot an aftermarket iPhone screen?
I spend my days “refurbishing” iPhone screens. This means removing the broken glass from the still intact and working LCD underneath it, and then laminating new glass to the display, ready to fit to an iPhone for the purpose of a screen repair.
How to tell which screens are genuine original, or an aftermarket copy varies between each iPhone model. The aftermarket copy screens themselves can also vary massively when it comes to quality – some are actually VERY good. Lets not forget that China also manufactures the iPhone screens that are used to build a shiny new iPhone.
With that said, the ONLY screens I deem worthy to be refurbished, are the genuine original screens. I advertise these screens to my phone repair customers as such, and so a genuine original apple LCD is what they get.
Because of my extensive experience with so many iPhone displays, I’ve come to know the real from the fake pretty well. Granted it’s a lot easier to tell the difference with the display removed from the phone, but 9 times out of 10 I can tell just by looking at the assembled phone.
The shining a light at the display trick? I heard about that years ago – I think the info leaked out from an apple technician handbook or something. I’ve tried it, comparing known genuine screens to non genuine screens, and really I don’t consider it to be a very good tool to use to distinguish between the two.
Sticky note on the glass? Nope – Sure, the original glass has an oleo-phobic coating which makes it harder for finger prints to stick to, and possibly sticky notes too – but over time that coating can fade away, and replacement glass (such as what I use) can also have this same coating applied- this glass can be built onto poor quality aftermarket LCD’s too, as well as the good ones.
What you will notice, on a poor quality aftermarket display, is that the black area is a lighter shade. The original screens, and also some high quality aftermarket screens are a nice deep black. In the case of a high quality aftermarket screen being fitted, unless you open the phone and examine the cables and the build of the display, you will only really know by comparing the colours carefully against a known original iPhone display, with the iPhone having a richer, warmer tone to the colours.
