Why does my printer show as offline when it’s turned on? ▼
The most common cause of a printer showing “offline” when it’s on is that the printer’s IP address has changed — usually after a router restart or power cut. Windows stores the printer’s old IP address and can no longer reach it. Fix: delete and reinstall the printer, or set a static IP for the printer in your router. My new laptop can’t find my printer — what’s the fix? ▼
When you get a new laptop, the printer driver needs to be freshly installed. Don’t use the CD that came with the printer — always download the latest driver directly from the manufacturer’s website (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother). For WiFi printers, make sure your new laptop and the printer are on the same WiFi network (both 2.4GHz or both 5GHz). Why won’t my printer connect to my new WiFi network? ▼
If you’ve got a new router or changed your WiFi password, the printer still has the old network credentials stored. You need to reconnect the printer to your WiFi through its own control panel or app. For most HP printers this is done through HP Smart app. For Epson, use the Epson iPrint app. For Canon, use Canon PRINT Inkjet. Why is my printer’s scan function not working on my Mac? ▼
macOS often strips out third-party scanner apps after a system update. The fix is usually to reinstall the full driver package from the manufacturer’s website — not just the print driver but the full suite including the ICA scanner driver. On newer Macs (M1/M2/M3), some older printers’ scanner drivers are not compatible at all. If reinstalling doesn’t help, we diagnose printer and scanner issues from $89 in Epping and Wollert.
