What should I check before buying a second-hand iPhone? ▼
Before buying any second-hand iPhone: (1) Ask the seller to sign out of Apple ID in front of you — Settings › Apple ID › Sign Out. (2) Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health — below 80% means a replacement is needed. (3) Check for Face ID / Touch ID working. (4) Test the screen for dead pixels and touch sensitivity. What does iCloud locked mean and how do I avoid it? ▼
Activation Lock (iCloud Lock) means the iPhone or iPad is still linked to the previous owner’s Apple ID. You cannot use the device, reset it or restore it without the original owner’s Apple ID password. There is no legitimate way to bypass this — anyone claiming otherwise is a scammer. The only prevention: watch the seller sign out of their Apple ID completely before you hand over any money. How do I check if a second-hand Windows laptop is activated? ▼
Go to Settings › Update & Security › Activation (Windows 10) or Settings › System › Activation (Windows 11). It should say “Windows is activated with a digital licence”. If it says “Windows is not activated”, you will need to purchase a licence ($120–$200) or it was likely licensed through a corporate volume agreement that won’t transfer to you. Can a second-hand MacBook have a firmware password I can’t remove? ▼
Yes — older Intel MacBooks can have a firmware password that prevents booting from any source other than the internal drive. On M1/M2/M3 MacBooks, Activation Lock functions similarly to iPhones. For any second-hand MacBook, check System Information › Hardware › Activation Lock Status (M-chip) or ask us to check during a pre-purchase inspection.
