The biggest difference between the 2 frequency bands are the speeds.

  • 2.4GHz WiFi support speeds upto 600Mbps
  • 5GHz WiFi supports speeds upto 1300Mbps

(Speeds mentioned above are dependent on the wireless standard of the router—802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, or 802.11ac)

The other difference is that 5GHz band is less likely to interfere which is why it’s faster, while 2.4GHz band is pretty crowded, interferences with garage doors, R/Cs, baby monitors etc… are common hence slower.

But, 5GHz tend to lessen the range as shorter wave length makes it less able to penetrate walls while walls are of lesser problem to the 2.4GHz band.

So concluding, 5GHz have a faster, shorter more stable range than 2.4GHz while it’s only strength is the longer range.
