Personal Cloud Storage: iCloud or One Drive?

– Your IT and Tech Mates Verdict: For business, OneDrive offers a significant advantage over iCloud with its per-file security in addition to its at-rest encryption. Having each file encrypted individually can prevent a single compromised file from infecting others.

This isn’t a question that can be answered. It depends on what your requirements are. iCloud and OneDrive are not comparable. They are similar, and have similar features, and included applications, but they are not the same.

iCloud started as a way to ensure that everyone that had an iPhone, iPad, or Macintosh, had email access (iCloud Nee Me.com Nee Mac.Com, etc).

It grew to include some Dropbox like functionality (eg. File Storage, but synchronization isn’t as robust as dropbox)

Also having an iCloud account (which is free) gives you access to web versions of Pages (Page Layout & Word-processing), keynote (presentation software), numbers (spreadsheet software).

Those applications do have the ability to import and export as office documents, but they have more functionality than the equivalent MS Office packages, and they are available for free via the web.

That being said the amount of disk storage given to iCloud users is minimal at best, I’ve said for years that Apple needs to increase the free tier (5Gb) to include higher levels of disk space.

So according to Microsoft (Cloud Storage Pricing, Microsoft OneDrive) the free tier only includes 5 Gb of storage.

Paradoxically upgrading to a paid level actually drops your storage from Microsoft. Upgrading to the $1.99 level, gives you 100 Gb of storage, and nothing else? (See the chart)

But compare the paid levels:

  • iCloud 50 Gb – $0.99/month
  • iCloud 200 Gb – $2.99/Month
  • Microsoft 365 Personal, $69.99/year, or $6.99/month – 1Tb of storage
  • Microsoft 365 Family – $99.99/year, or $9.99/month – 1Tb per Person (Up to 6 people), additional storage is available at $$$.
  • iCloud 2Tb – $9.99/month

Overall, on paper very comparable. But there are hidden features in each environment, that make a difference. (Eg. Are you running on a iDevice? Windows Mobile? Windows?)

So I’ll ask, Chocolate or Vanilla? Why? Because without knowing your requirements, that about asks close to a useful answer I can give you…
