Is Microsoft Defender good enough for your computer?
A really great answer by John Weintraub below, I just want to add some context to what he wrote. It should be noted that Windows Defender has tremendously improved its performance in terms of detection rate while, being part of the OS, it’s arguably in pole position in terms of resource consumption. But it’s still not the best, to be honest, and numerous tests prove that. This is because AV vendors focus on fighting malware, while for Microsoft it’s just only one of the priorities.
But the main reason for this improvement, which you rightfully noticed, it that Microsoft learned. It learned from the teams it hired, it learned from the vulnerabilities that were reported to the company. Microsoft also gradually removed the backward compatibility of software that is no longer expected to run as smoothly on the newest versions of Windows as it used to do from 1995 until approximately mid-2000s – that was also a source of many software vulnerabilities.
While Microsoft still lacks focus on anti-malware, it has sucked up on a lot of talent and knowledge from AV vendors, and delivered the Windows Defender, with which you can survive some normal web surfing, but if your online behaviour gets riskier, I wouldn’t recommend relying solely on it.
