What is surge protection and do I need it?

An electronic surge protector is a device that shields computer systems and other electronic appliances from surges in electrical power or transient voltages flowing from the power supply. Surge protectors also need to replace on a regular basis.

A surge protector protects your computer from crashing when a surge occurs, sustaining minor damage that shortens its service life or failing and needing repair.

Is it potential dangerous: YES

How dangerous: well that completely depends on the reliability and cleanness of your electrical power (and home/building wiring).

A surge protector protects the devices from a spike in voltage, too much current draw, and will attempt to protect devices from power spikes from other devices not plugged into it.

When a power spike goes through your computer it can fry the power supply, and if the power supply is not a good quality unit it can fry other parts.

Proper protection (for desktops without their own battery) goes one step further and requires you to use a battery backup UPS system. Your computer connects to this via USB cable and it tells the computer it is on battery and to shut down if the outage lasts more than a few minutes.

This provides all the protection a surge protector provides, as well as making sure that data does not get corrupted, and that components don’t get damaged due to sudden loss of power. One very common thing to get fried due to sudden power loss is your ethernet port; since it is connected to a device that is connected to a different circuit in your home/building wiring, the trapped voltage tries to escape via this patch and the end result is it fries the port/chip.

At the end of the day which sounds more reasonable, the thousand + dollars of fried equipment or the $15 for a surge protector or $60 for a UPS.
